A Time When I Learned How To Be A Leader -- Jimmy

When I was a second year student in my university, I was selected to be the leader of the student union. There were a lot of issues that students have that need to be discussed and solved. I should be the person who communicated opinions between teachers and students. However, I didn’t know how to be the bridge between school and students, but also how to keep the students on track. I was worried that I would fail in this role.

But a few days after I was selected to be the leader, I began to think deeply about what I should do in the following year. I tried to ask for some information from the previous leader, and also searched for how to be a good leader on the internet. The most important thing that previous leader told to me was enhancing communicate skills. Through the internet, I knew that a good leader should have empathy, integrity, self-awareness, courage, respect, compassion, and resilience. Then I made appointments with my crew members and discussed the following events which we should complete together. During the time when I was the leader, we usually had arguments due to everyone wanting everything to go better. At first, we couldn’t agree on what to do. But after some discussions, I started to know the personalities of every member in my crew and we could get the important ideas from each other. In the meanwhile, everything seemed to be on track.

Finally, we noticed and had to protect some students’ rights, student affairs, smoothed the channels of communication between school and students while also assisting in various other activities. Thanks to this experience I have become more confident and braver as a leader and am able to face challenges in the future.

  1. Same as you, I often tend to be a leader of a group when I was in Japan, so I know how you feel. Almost people often hesitate to stand in front of everyone, but actually it's quite nice, isn't it
