A Time When I Challenged a Belief

I must have seemed a strange person at the beginning of this study abroad. This is because I wanted to make a lot of local friends. When I had just arrived in New Zealand, I gave a shot. But it didn’t work at all. When I went and talked to local people for the first time, I was stranger. Because I said “Can you be my friend, please?” suddenly. At that time, they were talking with me with a beautiful smile, but they must have thought “this is a crazy person” in their hearts. I asked about their Instagram account at the end of this conversation. Although I was waiting for my following request allowed for about two weeks, and ended up they weren’t allowed. In short, I was rejected.

However, from this experience, an idea occurred to my mind. What I thought was I should not try to make new friends in unnatural situations. In previous situation, it was too unnatural. So, I made up my mind to make friends in more natural situations such as club activities and volunteering.

Now, have past about two months since I came to New Zealand, and I have made a few friends so far. I’m trying to hang out with them as much as possible in order to improve my English skills. I think I should not have done such a things, such as coming and talking to other people suddenly. However, the truth that I challenged was a big thing for me. (251)
