The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) -- Cathy

On the 4th of July, I got an opportunity to observe the Three Minute Thesis (3MT), and it was amazing. There were two presenters, Holly Bates William and Arung Gihna Mayapada, they all did really good jobs on condensing and effectively presenting their research topic. Even though it was hard for me to catch up with their content, there was a lot to learn from their performance. Both of them gave well-structured speeches (hook - question - data - solution - conclusion) and engagement with the audience, which I personally think are necessary to fully convey their ideas in a time-limiting and pressure contest like 3MT. It is difficult to choose whose performance was my favourite, because I liked how calm and nice when Holly was doing her part, and the bright and enthusiastic energy of Arung. Moreover, I also learnt from the judges that in terms of using the phrase "gender diversity", it should be taken into consideration more cautiously. Speaking of improving my ability to communicate in English in an academic context, I'm aware that it is important to be well-prepared of the content I'm giving, and to practice to be perfect. Because I'm the type of person who easily get nervous when it comes to public speaking, so being well-prepared and practicing as much as possible are the only ways which help me to success in delivering speeches in front of big crowds.
